The Beatles provided an inspiration to a generation with their words and music, and that inspiration continues in the DOSA Football Club in 2001.
Help! For this Club to continue to enjoy the success that we have on the field, and to improve our off-field performance, we must work together. There are many tasks to be completed on a regular and one-off basis, and at the moment too much is being left to too few. All of our current players and coaching staff are working hard on the training track and on Saturdays, and their efforts are starting to pay dividends with wins on the board. Gerard Wolfe as Bar Manager and Jody O'Rourke as the committee member responsible for membership are doing a fantastic job, and Roger McCarthy, Rod Ferguson and Graeme Honey form a reliable and hard-working match committee. But they need more support: can you help in one of the following areas:
Reserves match manager. This job involves being at every reserves game from about 11am to 2.30pm, and ensuring that player lists, goal umpires scorecards, match balls and match statistics are completed in accordance with Association guidelines. Is this the job for you?
Water runners for senior, reserves and under 17s teams. Reserves player Chris Allen has shown the way by helping out for the seniors in the game against University, but I think that it is too much to expect a player to follow up a hard game with two hours of attending to the needs of their club-mates. Could this be the job for you?
Sponsorship. Do you know of a business that could benefit from sponsoring the DOSA Football Club in 2001? Please let us know. Importantly, if you have the marketing skills to assist in seeking sponsorship for the club, please offer these skills for your club.
Assisting with social functions. Can you assist in serving food, preparing tables etc? Your assistance won't impact too much on your enjoyment of our social functions, but your help could make these get-togethers all the more enjoyable for the few who are left to organise these occasions.
If you can help, talk to Tony Caplice, Scott Ewington, Penny Bacon or Leesa Baker today.
Money! One of the principle sources of our revenue is through membership. If you haven't paid your membership by now, you're making it difficult for the club to operate. See Jody O'Rourke today to pay your membership.
On the field
Each of our teams have played 5 games, with the seniors winning three, the reserves two, and the under 17s one.
The seniors' victories have come at the expense of Friends, Richmond and University. Friends and Richmond don't have the depth of the other clubs in the Old Scholars Association in 2001, and are unlikely to defeat any of the other five sides in the competition. Our losses to St Virgils and OHA were very disappointing, as they came after healthy half-time leads. There is no question over our physical fitness, but these defeats clearly demonstrate that we must concentrate for the whole game. The 8 point victory of University was an important win; it showed that we could respond to the challenge of a fast, physical side, and come back strongly after a slow start. Matthew Honner has been in great form in the middle of the ground, and must be an early season favourite for the club best and fairest award. Across the centre Jeremy Busch, Dave Bacon and Damon Marsh have been solid contributors, while Matt Honey and Simon Harris lead a potent forward line. Rick Howard has been a strong performer in defence, and he has received good support from Dean Hodge in the past three games.
The reserves have had big wins over Friends and Richmond, disapointing losses to St Virgils and OHA, and a nail-biting defeat to University. Keiran Dooley was outstanding in the first two games, but a serious shoulder injury has finished his season. Michael "Pumpkin" Glancy has been an inspirational leader, while Chris Robinson, Dave Bennett, Chris Allen and Rowdy O'Connor have also been good contributors.
Our under 17s had a very hard start to the year, drawing the two strongest sides in the competition for their first two games. The majority of our side are under 16s and the defeats by St Virgils and Clarence were not surprising. The boys showed great resilience to bounce back and defeat New Norfolk at Boyer for their first win. And did they enjoy singing the Club song for the first time - you bet! A narrow loss to Brighton was followed by a good performance against an older and stronger Glenorchy side. Adam Fox has been outstanding across half back, while Ryan Hanlon, Scott Hansen and Jon Murray have done well on the ball and in the centre. Captain Justin O'Brien has been our best forward, and Sam Coppleman has worked tirelessly in the ruck. Come along and see the the under 17s play soon - the future captains, best & fairest winners and leading goalkickers of the DOSA Football Club are running around each Sunday and developing their football skills. Come and witness the DOSA Football Club of the future.
News around the club
Congratulations to 1999 DOSA premiership coach Blair Brownless on being appointed as Coach of the Old Scholars representative side. The OSFA rep side will play against the NTFA as a curtain-raiser to the SFL versus NTFL game under lights at York Park on Saturday 9th June, and will be made up of 2-4 players from each OSFA club. Dual DOSA Premiership Coach and DOSA life member Mick Bowden was initially appointed as Coach, but work commitments prevented Mick from accepting the offer.
Congratulations to under 17s players Justin O'Brien and Scott Hansen who were selected in the under 16 Southern Tasmanian team recently. Both are members of the Tassie Mariners development squad, and both have promising football careers ahead of them.
New guernseys are on the way. New guernseys with a new design in the Club's traditional colours of Maroon, Gold & Black have been ordered. The guernseys, which will be provided for all seniors, reserves and under 17s players, will be delivered in 8-10 weeks. Copies of the design will be displayed in the clubrooms in coming weeks.
Milestones.
Phil Sliskovic and Chris Hale both play their 200th game for the Club against Hutchins on Saturday. It is fitting that Slick and Crud reach this milestone together, as they have played so many games together and both were members of the back-to-back senior premiership sides of 1994-95.
Playing his 150th game for the club this week (provided that he overcomes injury) is Todd Curtain. Turtle was a member of the 94 and 95 premiership sides with Slick and Crud, and he was also in thee 99 premiership side.
Another player hoping to overcome injury this week to reach a milestone is Neil Clark. Nobby has played 99 games for DOSA, and has been a member of premiership sides in 1995 and 1999. Also playing his 100th game this week is Martin Evans. Dibble is a legend around the club and has been Reserves Captain for the past couple of seasons. Dave Bacon plays his 50th game for the club this week. Dirty was a member of the 99 Premiership side, and playing against Hutchins always brings out the best in him.
Jodie O'Rourke played his 50th game for the club against OHA - a tribute to his persistence and ability to overcome both injury and adversity.
Other players likely to reach milestones this season are Tom Jarvis (350th), Scott Lennox (200th) , Mick Bowden and Damien Arrowsmith (150th), Matt Honey, Snowy Loveless, Pumpkin Glancy and Shaun McGuire (100th), Potsy Hartill and Phil Bacon (50th).
